Jody Small's Story
Jody Small Productions evolved in 1993 following her work as Founding Director of Film and Video at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC where Small collaborated with the exhibition team on three landmark films and an Audio Theatre while producing seventy compilation programs that would become the heart of the permanent exhibition.
It was at the USHMM, amid the responsibility of preserving survivors’ stories, that Small developed a strong interest in oral histories. She later put those skills to work for The Vietnam Era Education Center, Holocaust Museum Houston, the Corning Museum of Glass and elsewhere.
Small originally honed her producing skills at WUSA-TV in Washington, DC where she won an Emmy Award for a series about Georgetown University Basketball Coach John Thompson and his impact beyond the court.
Today she says storytelling is her “secret sauce and her passion.” That’s why in 2021 she began filming individuals about their experiences during the first year of the pandemic.
Her one-hour documentary, The Storm & The Boats, was inspired by a desire to preserve the past for the future by creating a permanent record about the first year of the pandemic.
“I hope this film will enlighten future generations while allowing us to assess where we are today. Through both tragic and inspirational human experiences, we are reminded of the impact and consequences of the pandemic and the work that must still be done to move forward.”
The full collection of interviews can be accessed at the Rutgers University Oral History Archive in New Brunswick, NJ.
